Doug Fir Library

Having worked with these clients previously on other projects, being asked back for this project was a no brainer.

With a growing book and vinyl collection, our clients wanted not only a piece that would house both, but also something that tied the rest of the room together. Having previously worked with them to install battered beams and columns as a division between the family room and the kitchen, we wanted to have an approach that accentuated not only that work, but that of the 5” crown moulding and the shaker style cabinets in the kitchen.

Matching the kitchen cabinets style on the lower half of the library, we found a perfect way to house the vinyl collection. The drawers are full extension and come out beyond the cabinet for easy access to the records.

The upper shelves are all fixed and met with a very clean and simple style that works in concert with the features of the rest of the house. The custom library ladder adds a nice, practical touch. It can be moved out of the way and hung on the brick of the chimney allowing for more floor space, while serving as an art piece.

Our favorite part of this build was the scribing of the trim that hugs the fireplace. Instead of making a division, we brought the wood so close to the brick that they seem to have been built at the same time.
